MLVSS (Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids) & VSS (Volatile Suspended Solids)
The crucible and the dried sample (M1) are weighed. After this, M1 is placed in a furnace for further high-temperature treatment. M2 is heated at higher temperatures to incinerate the volatile portion (organic matter). Once cooled, the remaining solids are weighed again (M3). This step distinguishes organic and inorganic solids. For MLVSS and VSS, subtract the final mass (M3) from the initial mass (M2) to determine the amount of volatile solids. MLSS includes both volatile and non-volatile solids, while MLVSS represents only the volatile portion (organic matter), so MLSS will always be higher.
