MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) & TSS (Total Suspended Solids)
MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) tests follow similar procedures, but MLSS tests are done on mixed liquor, while TSS is done on the effluent (decanted liquid after sludge settling). MLVSS and VSS similarly analyze the volatile solids, indicating the organic portion in both cases. In MLSS and TSS testing, the sample is filtered to capture solids. The filter paper is weighed before filtering to establish a baseline mass. After filtration, the filter paper with the captured solids is dried in a muffle furnace to evaporate water, leaving behind only the solids. It’s weighed again to determine the mass of the solids.
